Now, how about all of those pesky remotes in your house. You’ve usually got 2 or 3 for the TV, maybe more if you have a theater setup. Promixis shows us it can handle these tasks along with home automation controls, with it’s iPhone home control concept shown in the link above. You can turn off, on, and dim your lights. You can even control your A/C and heater from your iPhone, over 3G or wifi. Seems like getting the initial home automation setup would be the painful and expensive part, and this would be like sweet icing on a cake. This particular software is just a concept but the technology (IR over wifi) is already being used in iPhone home automation software.

Apparently, there is a new strain of medical marijuana out there being marketed as “Tom Cruise Purple“. Why the dubious honor? The weed is reportedly so potent that it causes you to see things that aren’t really there. We all know Tom is heavy into the Scientology side of things — so we’re thinking this is probably where the joke is being directed. Of course, the actor isn’t backing the moniker — especially with his past objections to psychotropic drugs — and is getting his legal team into action. From the article,

Launch SpingDial
Scroll through your contacts and tap on one you want to add to your home screen
Adjust the name via a text-box if you need to, or leave it as is and hit Create
That's it. If you have a picture attached to the contact, it will be used for the home screen icon. If you don't, it uses its own sort of goofy icon, so maybe worth changing that program icon.

Deleting entries you no longer need is also easily done within the program (though you cannot delete them directly on the home screen like webclips and program icons).

On waking, I reach for my blackberry. It tells me what city I'm in; the hotel rooms offer no clues. Every Courtyard by Marriott is interchangeable. Many doors into the same house. From the size of my suitcase, I can recall the length of my stay: one or two days, the small bag. Three or four, the large. Two bags means more than a week.

CNBC, shower, coffee, email. Quick breakfast, $10.95 (except in California, where it's $12.95. Another clue.)

Getting there is the worst part. Flying is an endless accumulation of indignities. Airlines learned their human factors from hospitals. I've adapted my routine to minimize hassles.

Park in the same level of the same ramp. Check in at the less-used kiosks in the transit level. Check my bag so I don't have to fuck around with the overhead bins. I'd rather dawdle at the carousel than drag the thing around the terminal anyway.

Always the frequent flyer line at the security checkpoint. Sometimes there's an airline person at the entrance of that line to check my boarding pass, sometimes not. An irritation. I'd rather it was always, or never. Sometimes means I don't know if I need my boarding pass out or not.

Same words to the TSA agent. Standard responses. "Doing fine," whether I am or not. Same belt. It's gone through the metal detector every time. I don't need to take it off.

Only... today, something is different. Instead of my bags trundling through the x-ray machine, she stops the belt. Calls over another agent, a palaver. Another agent flocks to the screen. A gabble, a conference, some consternation.

They pull my laptop, my new laptop making its first trip with me, out of the flow of bags. One takes me aside to a partitioned cubicle. Another of the endless supply of TSA agents takes the rest of my bags to a different cubicle. No yellow brick road here, just a pair of yellow painted feet on the floor, and my flight is boarding. I am made to understand that I should stand and wait. My laptop is on the table in front of me, just beyond reach, like I am waiting to collect my personal effects after being paroled.

I'm standing, watching my laptop on the table, listening to security clucking just behind me. "There's no drive," one says. "And no ports on the back. It has a couple of lines where the drive should be," she continues.

A younger agent, joins the crew. I must now be occupying ten, perhaps twenty, percent of the security force. At this checkpoint anyway. There are three score more at the other five checkpoints. The new arrival looks at the printouts from x-ray, looks at my laptop sitting small and alone. He tells the others that it is a real laptop, not a "device". That it has a solid-state drive instead of a hard disc. They don't know what he means. He tries again, "Instead of a spinning disc, it keeps everything in flash memory." Still no good. "Like the memory card in a digital camera." He points to the x-ray, "Here. That's what it uses instead of a hard drive."

The senior agent hasn't been trained for technological change. New products on the market? They haven't been TSA approved. Probably shouldn't be permitted. He requires me to open the "device" and run a program. I do, and despite his inclination, the lead agent decides to release me and my troublesome laptop. My flight is long gone now, so I head for the service center to get rebooked.

Behind me, I hear the younger agent, perhaps not realizing that even the TSA must obey TSA rules, repeating himself.

This is the sQuba, a concept—but very real—car devised by James Bond fanatic Frank Rinderknecht who, when he's not channeling the spirit of 007's gadget mentor Q, designs classic concept cars for a living. The amphibious two-seater has been made from a Lotus Elise, with three electric motors replacing the petrol engine—one powers the back wheels, while the other two work the specially designed propellers.
Top speed is 75mph on land, 4mph on water and 2mph below the surface. The zero-emission vehicle is powered by rechargeable li-ion batteries and dives to 10 meters and, once submerged, can stay underwater for up to two hours.

All this technology, however, comes at a very steep price. Costing almost $1.5 million to build, the car, which will be on show at next month's Geneva Motor Show, will never enter production. "We don't plan to build it, even in a limited capacity," says Rinderknecht. "But if someone wants to take up the project that would be great. I'm sure there will be people interested in buying one."

Firstly the sound file has to be in a .caf format.
Convert any sound you want to .aiff, then rename the extension to .caf and replace the file you want.

rename the file to one of the following:
sms-received1.caf
sms-received2.caf
sms-received3.caf
sms-received4.caf
sms-received4.caf
sms-received6.caf

place the file into:
System/Library/Audio/UISounds (you can make a back up of the original sms-received file if you like)

this will replace the file on your phone with the sound you want. the caveat is that on your phone it will still show up with the name of the original file, i.e. if you replace sms-received4.caf it will still read "Horn" on your phone in settings. but when you select it will play the tone you replaced it with. of course to reverse this just replace the original file in the folder.

At 7 am last Wednesday, I got a door-buzz and a 'politi!' from the little door-phone. They were from Hvidovre, a non-place somewhere out in the suburbs. Thinking it was about my stolen wallet, I let the mid-40s, ripe-bellied officers into my apartment, the whole time thinking, 'Wow, your wallet gets stolen in Denmark and the cops visit to make sure you're OK. The service.' After they sat down in the kitchen, I asked what was up, and was told, 'Well, you stole a credit card and ordered a bunch of shit online. And we know about it.'

Coppa what?

'What? Wait. Wait. What. What?!' I said. 'Can we do this in English? I thought you just said I stole a credit card.'
'Your Danish is fine,' the dough-faced one said in Danish. 'We know you stole it, we know what you did. We're here to take your computer.'
'My computer, why?'
'We traced the transaction back to the wireless network in this apartment.'
'But we have an open wireless connection. It's unsecured.'
'The internet doesn't work that way.'
'What? Wait. What?'

This conversation repeated itself three or four times, and somehow moved into the bedroom, in front of my laptop.

Doughface: 'That one. We're taking it.'
Me: 'Well, I just bought that one two weeks ago, so it's not going to be much help.'
Doughface: 'What were you doing the night of November 15?'
Me: 'Rented a car, fucked your father and played some backgammon. I'm sure I have receipts...' [OK, so I actually said 'I don't know']
Doughface: 'If you can't prove what you were doing that night, we're arresting you right now.'
Me: 'First of all, no you're not.' [Remember how I said I'm a dick when I'm speaking Danish?] 'You have no evidence against me at all. Secondly, it's not up to me to prove I didn't do this. It's up to you to prove that I did.'
Doughface: 'November 15!'
Me: 'Fine, lemme check my e-mails. I was probably at a concert or something.'

I sat down, opened my e-mail account and scrolled through to November, looking for invitations, confirmation e-mails, whatever.

Doughface: [audible gasp] 'If that computer's only two weeks old, how are you checking your e-mails from November?!' [Makes 'gotcha' face.]
Me: 'Wait. What?! These are on the internet. They aren't on my computer.'
Doughface: 'You just said it was two weeks old, but those e-mails say November!' [Gotcha Face intensifies to David Caruso Face]
Me: 'Internet!'
Doughface: 'If it's only two weeks old --'
Me: Internet.

The italics seemed to do it. Doughface backed off for a few minutes. We moved into my roommate's room.

'Dude. That's the whole computer. Right there. The blue object the size of an armadillo.'
'No. Where the daaaaata goes. The computer part.'
'That is the computer. For Hell!' Danish swear words aren't as satisfying.
'So that's the entire computer, right there?'
I was standing there with a look on my face like I was watching a dog walk on its hind legs.
'New technology, huh?' he said.
I blew the dust off the keyboard and handed it to him. 'Do you mind if I check your badge again?'

Once I figured out the italics thing, it went a bit smoother.

'Could one of your friends have committed this crime on your computer, when you weren't looking?'
'I have unsecured internet. That means anyone can use it.'
'You mean your neighbors can log on to this internet connection?'
'YES THEY CAN. UNSECURED.'
'Oh. So maybe this wasn't done on your computer, just on your wireless network.'
'Will wonders never motherfucking cease. Yes. It could have been anyone.'

They still took my computer. And my roommate's state of the art iMac 1.0. And our wireless router. I got a phone call two hours later ('Thank god,' was my first thought. 'They're actually cops.'), and was informed that there is a 'mountain' of police work for their IT department to do, so they don't know when I'll get my computer and router back. This was a week ago. I'm writing this at a smoky yet frigid internet cafe, blinking from the nicotine and ignoring the pube-scalping death metal coming from the overhead speakers. I blame you, suburbs.

Stevie Irwin, the worlds best crocodile hunter has been killed in Australia.

Irwin was a filming an underwater documentary on the Great Barrier reef in Queensland when he was stung and killed by a stingray barb.

The incident occurred after Irwin and his crew began their diving expedition near the town of Port Douglas; paramedics were rushed to the scene in a helicopter but Irwin died from a stingray barb to the heart reports MSN.

Irwin, whose family founded Australia Zoo became an international celebrity following the success of his TV show ‘Crocodile Hunter’ and quickly developed a cult status.

He is survived by his wife and TV sidekick Terri and their two children Bindi Sue, eight and Bob, two.

He will be sadly missed.

Yes, this kid used a human head to make a bong.

On April 8, 2005, Buckalew broke into a tomb, opened the lid of a casket and cut off the head of a corpse. He stole eyeglasses and a bow tie from the dead man. He then wrapped the head in plastic bags and took it home, The Caledonian-Record reported.

The teen reportedly told friends that he planned to leave the head outside to dry and would then bleach it, a police affidavit said. The witnesses said his plan was to turn the skull into a bong -- a pipe generally used to smoke marijuana. Police serving an arrest warrant on a Jefferson County man said he answered the door while smoking a marijuana cigarette.David Johnson, of Second Street, Brilliant, was originally wanted for an assault which happened earlier Wednesday.But when police arrived at his home, they were in for another surprise.Wells Township police officer Sean Norman said police suspected drugs were being sold at the residence, but never expected the suspect to answer the door smoking the evidence.Police then obtained a warrant to search the home, and soon recovered about 20 "well grown" marijuana plants growing in the basement, the main floor and the attic.

A Japanese clever-clogs has brought the magical world of Hogwarts one step closer!

Professor Susumu Tachi of Tokyo University has made a coat that you can see through just like Harry Potter's invisibility cloak.

The picture on the coat is made by a viewfinder which puts together the moving images which are behind the wearer.

Japanese scientist hopes one day he'll be able to make you completely see-through.

This should help people like surgeons who would like to be able to see through their hands when they are operating.

But we reckon it would be best for sneaking round school corridors when you're meant to be in your house dorm!

UPDATE: Muffins Send Teachers, School Staff To Hospital

There is a follow up on that bad batch of muffins. It turns out the muffin man turned out to be the muffin men. Two teens face charges Thursday in the case.

A surveillance video shows a young man delivering the muffins to a Dallas high school last week.

The treats were taken to the teacher's lounge. Dallas police say they were laced with marijuana. The 18 staff members who ate them went to the hospital.

Both 18-year-olds are charged with five counts, each of assaulting a public servant.

Officials say the investigation continues.

Marijuana not as deadly as thought

LOS ANGELES: Marijuana smoking does not increase a person's risk of developing lung cancer, according to the findings of a new study at the University of California Los Angeles that surprised even the researchers.

They had expected to find that a history of heavy marijuana use, like cigarette smoking, would increase the risk of cancer.

Instead, the study, which compared the lifestyles of 611 Los Angeles County lung cancer patients and 601 patients with head and neck cancers with those of 1,040 people without cancer, found no elevated cancer risk for even the heaviest pot smokers.

It did find a 20-fold increased risk of lung cancer in people who smoked two or more packs of cigarettes a day.

The study results were presented in San Diego on Tuesday at a meeting of the American Thoracic Society. The study was confined to people under age 60 since baby boomers were the most likely age group to have long-term exposure to marijuana, said Donald Tashkin, senior researcher and professor at the UCLA School of Medicine.

Bears eat monkey, visitors shocked

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands -- Bears killed and devoured a monkey in front of horrified visitors at a Dutch zoo, officials and witnesses said.

Visitors reported that the grisly scene began as several bears chased the monkey, a macaque, onto a wooden structure at Beekse Bergen Safari Park.

They said a bear tried unsuccessfully to shake the monkey loose, ignoring attempts by keepers to distract it. The bear then climbed up and grabbed the monkey, mauling it to death and bringing it to its concrete den, where three bears ate it.

The park confirmed the killing. "The habitats here in the safari park are arranged in such a way that one animal almost never kills another, but they are and remain wild animals," it said in a statement.

The attack occurred in an area of the zoo that contains both monkeys and sloth bears, a type of black bear found in the Asian subcontinent.

The park said it plans now to move the macaques to another part of the park.

Japanese convenience store operator Seven-Eleven Japan has breathed fresh air into its product lineup by announcing it will add cans of oxygen to its shelves.

The firm said it would make an entry into the rapidly expanding oxygen market and begin selling cans of oxygen on May 24.

Oxygen has emerged as a popular new product and sparked the creation of city "oxygen bars" that provide oxygen for customers to breathe in. The convenience store operator will sell small portable cans. It is the first retailer among Japanese convenience stores and supermarkets to enter the oxygen market.

The idea behind the product is to allow buyers to replenish their oxygen levels anytime they feel a lack of it due to stress, fatigue, or other factors. Seven-Eleven Japan developed the product together with Tokyo based Hakugen, a manufacturer of miscellaneous lifestyle-related goods.

A drop in the amount of oxygen in the body can make people start to yawn and sigh. Normal air contains only about 21 percent oxygen, but the oxygen concentration in the cans is 95 percent, and breathing it in can reportedly bring on a feeling of invigoration.

Each can contains enough oxygen for 35 two-second inhalations, meaning each can lasts for roughly a week if it is used five or six times a day. At first the canned oxygen will be sold in Tokyo, Kanagawa and Chiba prefectures, then at all 11,000 of Seven-Eleven Japan's

nationwide stores from June 14.

A developer of the party cracker that shoots out a teddy bear holds up the device at Sunamiya in Imabari, Ehime Prefecture, in April.

IMABARI, Ehime -- A paint firm here is hoping to add color to wedding receptions in Japan with a new device it has jointly developed -- a gun-shaped party cracker that shoots out a teddy bear.

Sunamiya, a paint firm based in Imabari, Ehime Prefecture, announced the development of the device, which blasts a teddy bear equipped with a parachute into the air. The teddy bear parachutes down afterwards.

Developers hit on the idea after noticing that it had become a trend for people to throw teddy bears into the air instead of bouquets at wedding receptions.

In addition to paint products, Sunamiya produces a paintball marker used to fire paintballs at escaping criminals so they can be identified and captured.

"We're hoping to capture the hearts of couples," a company representative said, commenting on the new device.

The crackers will go on sale in May, and will be marketed to businesses.

The FDA outlaws the use of marijuana for medical purposes.

BEIJING, April 22 (Xinhuanet) -- U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced its oppositon to the use of marijuana for medical purposes, a decision not only contradicting a 1999 report by medical experts on medicinal use of marijuana for certain conditions, but also overriding state efforts to legalize the plant.

In the statement released on late Thursday, the FDA declares that "no sound scientific studies supported medical use of marijuana for treatment in the United States, and no animal or human data supported the safety or efficacy of marijuana for general medical use."

The 1999 report was released by the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, which concluded that marijuana was "moderately well suited for particular conditions, such as chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting and AIDS wasting."

Currently, 10 states in America have passed legislation allowing the medical use of marijuana. These include Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Maine, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Vermont and Washington. Arizona also enacted similar legislation, but with no formal program to administer marijuana by prescription.

"These measures are inconsistent with efforts to ensure that medications undergo the rigorous scientific scrutiny of the FDA approval process and are proven safe and effective." FDA said.

Backed by FDA's decision, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) now has the right to enforce federal laws opposing the medical use of marijuana -- even in states that have passed legislation allowing its use.

Both the DEA and the FDA also enjoy the backing of U.S. Supreme Court. In a 6-3 decision in June 2005, the court ruled that DEA agents were within their rights in 2001 to arrest two California residents who were using marijuana at the time to help ease their symptoms -- one with brain cancer and the other with severe back pain.

Dr. William M. Lamers, a consultant to the Hospice Foundation of America, framed the battle over medical marijuana as a bureaucratic turf war. "It's a matter of states rights versus federal rights," he said. "

Marijuana has been effective in relieving pain and chemotherapy-related symptons such as nausea and vomiting.

Marijuana has also been effective in stimulating the appetite of people with AIDS and other conditions that are accompanied with a loss of appetite, Lamers said.Enditem

After earlier revealing the possibility to add your own Plug-Ins to Windows Live Messenger, I have now figured out exactly how they work, and how you can get them (this, at the moment, applies mostly to fanatic WLM developers)... Behold! The first example of a plug-in on the world wide web.

While the plug-in abillity is hidden by default, it requires only a simple key in the Register to be enabled. If you want to do this manually, go to [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MSNMessenger] and add a new DWord value, called AddInFeatureEnabled. Set the value to "1". It is recommended however that you use the Register tweak you can dowload below!

To get people started, I have uploaded a small example written in C# for .NET Framework 2.0. For those curious Messers who are not interested in developing a plug-in, but who want to just check it out, you can also directly download my (pre-compiled) example plugin.

To add it to WLM, apply the supplied Register tweak, and restart WLM. Then, go to Tools, Options and select the Add-Ins tab. Click the Add to Messenger button and find the example DLL. Be sure to tick "Automatically enable this ..".

Violent games make young men smoke marijuana

That's according to a study carried out by Dr Sonya Brady of the University of California.

GTA makes young men smoke marijuana

The study, carried out by Dr Brady and Professor Karen Matthews at the University of Pittsburgh, involved a group of 100 male undergraduates aged 18 to 21, asked to play either Grand Theft Auto III or The Simpsons: Hit and Run. In GTA the player took the role of a criminal and was instructed by the Mafia to beat up a drug dealer with a baseball bat. In The Simpsons: Hit and Run the player took on the role of Homer Simpson attempting to get his daughter's science project to school before it can be marked late.

The study claims that the men who have just played a violent game (GTA) are more likely to see others' attitudes towards them as hostile, smoke marijuana, and drink alcohol.

"Parents have been told the message that violent video games and violent media in general can influence the likelihood that their kids will be aggressive," Dr. Sonya S. Brady told Reuters Health. "What this study suggests is that they might increase any type of risk-taking behaviour."

According to the report in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, playing a violent game caused young men's blood pressure to increase, and appeared to have a greater effect on those that came from violent homes or communities. No matter what background each male had, the researchers found that playing a violent game made the young men in the study less cooperative and more competitive in completing tasks with another person.

After playing one of the games, the males participating in the study were shown a scenario of a teacher telling his class that he suspects some students have cheated, but also that he is proud of those who did well. The teacher then asks a boy called Billy to stay behind after class so that he may speak with him. Participants were then asked to put themselves in Billy's position. When asked how likely it was that the teacher was going to accuse them of cheating, those participants who had been playing Grand Theft Auto were more likely think they would be accused.

The report is also one of the first to link violent games to behaviour other than violence, but will no doubt provide more ammunition to those against violent video games.
